Out of my mind made me view and understand things differently.
I learned that you can’t take life for granted. I sometimes forget how lucky I am to be able to talk and walk, and some people long for it every day, like Melody. ”I can’t talk. I can’t walk. I can’t feed myself or take myself to the bathroom.”I also view differently about my sisters. I used to think they were just annoying little room mates, but now I know that they can have a big impact on your life. Like how Penny is bringing joy to Melody. “I wish I could tell her I love her.” On that note, friends can be a big part of your life too. Melody didn’t really have anyone to talk to, until Rose came and talked and befriended Melody. “At school Rose whispered to me about the trip just like I’ve seen other kids do when they have secrets. I felt like a real girl.”
Above all, Out of my mind has help me see things in a newer, brighter way! :}

Sharon Draper’s Writer’s

The author made a great decision in writing Out of my MInd.

  She has a great sense of humor, ’’I tried so hard I farted!’’

  She gives us an idea of what it would be like to have a disability, ‘’I can’t talk, I can’t walk I can’t feed, myself or take myself to the bathroom.’’

  I love her use of 1st person, it’s gives us a much greater example of her feelings and emotions. ‘’Since I never had trouble thinking or remembering, it actually sort of surprised me that I couldn’t do stuff. And it made me angry.’’

  These things helped me understand and enjoy the story much more.
